Extension springs are little less powerful than their brother, Torsion springs, because they are designed to specifically operate lighter doors. The spring itself is located at near the back of the upper tracks and is extended from the top of the garage door. Torsion springs on the other hand are used to lift heavier doors. The spring is mounted on both sides of the door, near the rear of the garage. Torsion springs are extremely powerful because they have to lift 400 plus pound doors day-in and day-out.
